Everyday spending & payments
A practical checklist for cards, cash, ATMs and comparing costs.
Build your budget around your dates and actual bookings. This guide gives planning questions rather than fixed prices or personal financial advice.
How should I prepare my payment options?
Montenegro uses the euro: EUR or €. You do not need to exchange euros into a separate Montenegrin currency. Prices, cash payments and ordinary local bookings are therefore generally expressed in euros. Keep a modest amount in usable smaller notes for minor purchases as well as your card; a shop’s card acceptance and your own bank’s foreign-use charges are separate questions. A hotel accepting cards does not prove that a rural stop or individual market seller does.
What should I check at an ATM?
Read the displayed fees and currency-conversion offer before accepting. Your own bank may charge separately. Use a machine in a suitable location and keep your PIN private.
How can I compare accommodation fairly?
Compare the total for your dates including taxes, cleaning, parking and any booking fees. Clarify the cancellation conditions and whether a deposit is refundable.
How do I plan daily costs?
List accommodation, transport, meals, activities and a buffer separately. Check current menus and operator prices for the places you actually plan to use. Do not rely on an undated country-wide average.
Why can two card payments have different costs?
The merchant price, your bank’s foreign-transaction charge and any currency conversion are different items. A terminal may offer to convert the euro amount into your home currency; the displayed conversion and your card issuer’s own conversion are not automatically identical. Read which currency and total you are authorising. Your bank’s tariff determines your card charges, so a country-wide promise of “no fees” would be misleading.
What belongs in a realistic budget?
Use five separate lines: accommodation, transport, food, paid visits and a reserve. For example, choosing a rural room may lower one quoted room price while adding a car or transfer; a central room can reduce local journeys. Compare complete alternatives for the same dates and number of people. This is an editorial budgeting method, not a published average daily cost for Montenegro.
How do deposits differ from actual spending?
A security deposit or card pre-authorisation may temporarily reduce the funds available on your card without being the final cost of the stay or rental. Treat that temporary requirement separately from your holiday budget. Save the written release conditions and keep another payment option if the hold would otherwise use all available funds. Refund timing depends on the provider and bank, not a universal local deadline.
What should I keep after paying?
Keep booking confirmations, itemised receipts and written cancellation terms together. A restaurant meal, prepaid excursion and refundable accommodation booking involve different refund arrangements; proof of what was purchased is more useful than a screenshot of a country’s generic price range. If a charge is unclear, identify the merchant, euro amount and date before contacting the business or your bank.
