Entry & visitor registration
Where to check entry rules and how to confirm your stay is registered.
Your passport, purpose of travel and circumstances determine the applicable rules. Use this guide to find the right official information and ask the right questions.
Do I need a visa?
Check the current entry conditions for your nationality and travel document with the Montenegrin authorities or consulate before booking. A rule applying to another passport may not apply to yours. This guide does not determine your eligibility.
Who registers my stay?
The national tourism website states that accommodation providers must register arrival and departure, with arrival registration within 12 hours. Confirm that your host or hotel is handling this and ask about tourist tax separately.
What if my host does not handle registration?
Official tourism guidance says tourists not using an accommodation provider’s registration service can register through the local tourism organisation, police or competent local authority within 24 hours. Contact the local office promptly to confirm the process and required documents.
What if I change municipality?
The same official guidance says registration is required in each municipality where you stay for more than 24 hours. Confirm arrangements when moving accommodation.
Does visitor registration give me residence or work rights?
Visitor registration, permission to enter, residence permission and permission to work are separate matters. For a longer stay, consult the government’s residency information and the competent office about your circumstances.
What information is useful for a registration visit?
Keep your travel document, the address where you are actually staying, the host or accommodation details and the dates of arrival and departure together. The registration question is about a real stay at a real address; the name of the municipality alone is not enough to identify it. If the accommodation provider handles the procedure, ask for confirmation rather than submitting contradictory information independently.
Are registration and tourist tax the same thing?
They are different questions: whether your stay has been reported, and what charge applies to your accommodation or circumstances. A reservation price can include or exclude an additional charge without explaining who completed the registration. Keep the accommodation invoice and any registration or payment confirmation together. Local tourist organisations are the practical starting point for the process at the place you are staying.
What does a change of address mean for my plan?
A multi-town itinerary should keep the real overnight address and dates for each stop. The national tourism guidance specifically discusses reporting in each municipality where the stay exceeds 24 hours. A day excursion without an overnight stay is a different itinerary fact from moving accommodation. Give your host accurate arrival and departure information so an onward trip is not confused with another night at the original property.
