Visiting

SIM, eSIM & staying connected

Choose a connection around your device, coverage needs and length of stay.

Last updated: Sources checked:

Compare the details behind the headline data allowance. Activation, validity and where you need coverage matter as much as the advertised price.

Should I use roaming, a SIM or an eSIM?

Crnogorski Telekom, One and m:tel are local operators; a physical SIM and a compatible eSIM provide two different installation methods. An eSIM does not automatically mean unlimited data, included local calls or coverage outside Montenegro. Start with your device’s SIM/eSIM capability and whether it is carrier-unlocked, then choose a plan for the country or countries you will actually visit. Keep your home line available if you need its verification messages.

What should I compare in a plan?

Check activation requirements, validity, included calls, hotspot use and fair-use limits. Ask about coverage at the actual accommodation or route where you need internet.

Is airport Wi-Fi available?

The official airport FAQ lists free Wi-Fi at Podgorica and Tivat airports. Keep essential arrival information downloaded in case a network is unavailable when you land.

What if I work remotely?

Ask the accommodation for a recent connection test and the router’s location. Plan a mobile-data backup and check whether the workspace, power supply and connection suit your working hours.

What does an actual tourist plan look like?

As a dated example checked on 27 October 2026, m:tel lists Tourist 15 at €15 with 500 GB for 15 days in Montenegro; the regional allowance is smaller than the domestic allowance. Telekom separately advertises regional eSIM plans and Montenegro-focused tourist offers. These examples illustrate why country coverage, validity and the domestic/regional split matter more than comparing only the largest number of gigabytes. Prices and package conditions can change.

How does eSIM activation work in practice?

You purchase a compatible plan, complete the provider’s identification step, receive the QR or activation information and add the profile in your phone’s mobile-network settings. Telekom’s tourist guidance asks for a passport or identity document during its online identification. Install while you have reliable Wi-Fi, choose the intended data line and read when the allowance starts. Installation time and the start of paid validity are not always the same event.

How do I keep the wrong line from using data?

On a dual-SIM phone, select the intended local or travel profile for mobile data and review the home line’s roaming and automatic data-switching settings. Keeping a home number for messages does not require deliberately sending all data through it. Do not delete an eSIM profile as a first troubleshooting step: reinstalling the same profile may require help or a new activation code from the provider.

What is different about a working connection?

A strong signal on the street does not establish a stable video call inside a particular room. For remote work, test the workspace itself, including an upload and a call, and keep a second connection independent of the household router. On mountain or lake outings, download maps and meeting details before leaving. No tourist plan can guarantee reception in every canyon or rural building.
